This Week in Sport: 7th August − 13th August 2023

There are some exciting fixtures in the world of sport this week. On Monday, the Canadian Open begins for both the WTA and ATP Tours, Tuesday sees London Spirit host Southern Brave in The Hundred, and on Wednesday, exciting track action in the UCI Cycling World Championships. The Women’s British Open begins on Thursday, and the second Quarter-Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will see Sweden face Japan on Friday.

Heading into the weekend, the men’s and women’s rugby league Challenge Cup Finals take place on Saturday, and Premier League action rounds out the week as Chelsea host Liverpool.

WTA Tour: Canadian Open

The Canadian Open begins Monday, with the WTA event taking place at the Aviva Centre in Toronto and the ATP event at the IGA Stadium in Montréal. The event is often seen as a warm-up for the US Open grand slam tournament, and this year’s event will see Iga Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina head in as favourites for the women’s singles tournament, and Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Jannik Sinner in the men’s singles.

The Hundred: London Spirit v Southern Brave

The Hundred sees London Spirit host Southern Brave at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Tuesday. In the women’s competition, Southern Brave currently sit second in the standings after a strong start and will be eyeing top spot with a victory here, whereas a win for London Spirit on Tuesday could see them move into the all-important top three. In the men’s competition, both sides have had difficult starts, so will be hoping a win over their opponents on Tuesday will begin a stronger run of form.

UCI Track Cycling World Championships: UCI Track Cycling World Championships

Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Glasgow

On Wednesday, there are some exciting track events taking place in the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow. Medals will be awarded in the Women Elite Sprint and the Men Elite Keirin. Medals will also be on offer in mountain bike cross-country, para-cycling road, road, and trials.

Ladies European & LPGA Tour: Women's British Open

Thursday 10th August 7:00AM GMT/8:00AM Local Time

Walton Heath Golf Club, Tadworth

Thursday will see the beginning of the fifth and final women’s golf major of the year, as the players head to Walton Heath Golf Club for day one of the Women’s British Open. The event will see the world’s best take part, with excitement around reigning champion Ashleigh Buhai, world number one Nelly Korda, and home favourite Georgia Hall.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Japan v Sweden

Friday 11th August 7:30AM GMT/7:30PM Local Time

Eden Park, Auckland

Friday will see FIFA Women’s World Cup Quarter-Final action, as Sweden take on Japan at Eden Park in Auckland. Sweden produced the shock of the tournament last time out, knocking out favourites and reigning champions, the US, in the Round of 16 on penalties, proving their ability to beat the best. Japan have shown that they are amongst the strongest in the tournament so far and will be starting to believe they can win this prestigious tournament for a second time.

Challenge Cup (Rugby League): Leigh Leopards v Hull Kingston Rovers

Saturday 12th August 2:00PM GMT/3:00PM Local Time

Wembley Stadium, London

Saturday will see the rugby league Challenge Cup Final take place, with Leigh Leopards taking on Hull Kingston Rovers at Wembley Stadium. The last time the two sides met in Super League action, the Leopards proved too strong for KR, beating them 34-4. The women’s Final will also take place on Saturday, with St Helens Women taking on Leeds Rhinos Women.

Premier League: Chelsea v Liverpool

Sunday 13th August 3:30PM GMT/4:30PM Local Time

Stamford Bridge, London

On Sunday, Premier League action will see Chelsea host Liverpool in the opening weekend of the season. Neither side enjoyed their strongest seasons last time out, so will be hoping they can get the new campaign off to a strong start against difficult opponents. The season will begin on Friday 11th, with reigning champions Manchester City travelling to Burnley.
