This Week in Sport: 14th August − 20th August 2023

There are some tantalising fixtures coming up this week in the world of sport. On Monday, the WTA and ATP Tours head to the US for the Cincinnati Masters, Tuesday sees action in The Hundred with the Oval Invincibles taking on London Spirit, and Australia and England will battle it out in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Semifinals on Wednesday. On Thursday, the PGA Tour’s BMW Championship begins, and Friday will see Collingwood host Brisbane Lions in the AFL.

Heading into the weekend, the World Athletics Championships get underway in Budapest, and the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place on Sunday.

WTA Tour: Cincinnati Masters

Lindner Family Tennis Center, Mason

Monday will see the beginning of the WTA’s first round of the Cincinnati Masters, with the ATP’s beginning yesterday. Some of the world’s best will head to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason for what is one of the last chances to prepare for the US Open grand slam tournament later in the month. In the women’s singles, Iga Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina are amongst the favourites to win, with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev favourites in the men’s.

The Hundred: Oval Invincibles v London Spirit

The Oval, London

Oval Invincibles host London Spirit at The Oval this Tuesday in The Hundred. In the women’s competition, sitting fourth, the Invincibles will want to push into the top three with a win here, whilst the Spirit will be on the hunt for their first win of this season’s competition. In the men’s competition, the Oval Invincibles currently sit top, so will go in as favourites in this matchup against sixth place London Spirit.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Australia Women v England Women

Stadium Australia, Sydney

Wednesday will see hosts Australia take on European champions England in the Semifinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Australia squeezed past France in the Quarterfinals in a tense penalty shootout, whilst England ultimately proved too strong for Colombia, winning 2-1. This is sure to be a well-contested and exciting game. Spain and Sweden will play their Semi-final on Tuesday.

PGA Tour: BMW Championship

Olympia Fields Country Club, Olympia Fields

The penultimate FedEx Cup playoff event, the BMW Championship, begins on Thursday, with the players heading to Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois to compete for the trophy. Patrick Cantlay has won the previous two editions of this tournament and will return to defend his title against tough competition from the likes of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIlroy.

AFL: Collingwood v Brisbane Lions

Docklands Stadium, Docklands

On Friday, first takes on second in the AFL, as Collingwood host Brisbane Lions at the Docklands Stadium. Both sides have looked strong this season, with Collingwood hoping to go all the way this year to equal the record number of AFL titles (16). The last time these two sides met, the Brisbane Lions enjoyed a strong performance, beating Collingwood 116 to 83, one of Collingwood’s four defeats of the season.

World Athletics Championships: World Athletics Championships 2023 Day 1

Budapest, Hungary

The World Athletics Championships begin on Saturday, as the world’s best athletes head to Budapest in Hungary to compete for world titles and records. The first weekend will see Finals in events such as the women’s 10000 metres, men’s shot put, and the always exciting men’s 100 metres.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Final

Sunday 20th August 10:00AM GMT/8:00PM Local Time

Stadium Australia, Sydney

The Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup will take place on Sunday, with just four team’s currently remaining in the tournament to fight for a place in this prestigious match at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Australia, England, Spain, and Sweden will all now be believing it is possible to lift the trophy after a month of hard battling against the world’s best. Who do you think will win?
