This Week in Sport: 4th December − 10th December 2023
There are some huge events coming up this week in the world of sport. On Monday, the Indiana Pacers host the Boston Celtics in the NBA, Tuesday will see the Netherlands take on Belgium in the Women’s Nations League, and Manchester United face Chelsea in the Premier League on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Big Bash League begins, with Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Stars the opening matchup, and Friday will see the Cape Town Sevens begin.
Heading into the weekend, India Women will host England Women in the second T20 of the series on Saturday, and rounding out the week, a huge match in the European Rugby Champions Cup on Sunday, as La Rochelle take on Leinster Rugby.
NBA: Indiana Pacers v Boston Celtics

The Eastern Conference leaders, the Boston Celtics, travel to Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to face the Indiana Pacers in the inaugural NBA in-season tournament Quarterfinals. The Celtics will go into the matchup as the favourites, but the Pacers will be hoping home-advantage can give them the boost they need to beat an impressive Boston side. The Final of the tournament will take place on Sunday 10th December.
Women’s Nations League: Netherlands Women v Belgium Women

On Tuesday, Women’s Nations League action will take place, with the Netherlands hosting Belgium at the Koning Willem II Stadion in Tilburg. There is a lot riding on what is the final game of the group stage, as the Netherlands sit top of Group 1 of League A with nine points and Belgium in third only one point behind. With only one qualification place for each group, both sides can still qualify for the knockout stages with a win, but the overall standings will also depend on England’s result against already relegated Scotland.
Premier League: Manchester United v Chelsea

Manchester United take on Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday. Both sides have had tough seasons up to this point, with United sitting seventh in the table and Chelsea sitting in tenth. However, both teams have showcased their talents in patches throughout their campaigns, meaning this matchup could produce a thoroughly entertaining affair.
Big Bash League: Brisbane Heat v Melbourne Stars

On Thursday, the Big Bash League, Australia’s domestic T20 cricket league, begins, with the opening match taking place at The Gabba in Brisbane, as the Brisbane Heat face off against the Melbourne Stars. The Heat, who were runners-up last time out, will be searching for their second BBL title, whilst the Stars are still after their first tournament win, despite making it to the Final three times. Both sides will know the tough task of dethroning the Perth Scorchers, though, who are looking for their third successive and sixth overall title.
SVNS Men's: Cape Town Sevens

The Cape Town Sevens gets underway on Friday, where both the men’s and women’s competitions will take place. Heading into the tournament, eyes will be on hosts South Africa in the men’s, as winners of the previous event in Dubai, as well as Australia in the women’s, who beat New Zealand at the UAE event. The tournament will come to its conclusion on Saturday.
Cricket in India: India Women v England Women (2nd T20I)

Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Heading into the weekend, the second T20 of the series in England Women’s tour of India will take place. The first of three T20s will take place on Wednesday, so the winner of that match will be looking to tie up the series afters just two games here at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
European Rugby Champions Cup: La Rochelle v Leinster Rugby

Rounding out the week, a huge matchup in the European Rugby Champions Cup opening weekend will take place, as reigning champions, La Rochelle, will host Leinster at the Stade Marcel Deflandre, in what is a repeat of the last two Finals; both of which were action packed and eventually won by La Rochelle, who are looking for their third successive title and to reach their fourth successive Final this year.
