This Week in Sport: 11th December − 17th December 2023
There is a lot to look forward to this week in the world of sport. On Monday, the Dallas Stars host the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL, Tuesday will see the second T20 match between South Africa and India take place, and Newcastle face AC Milan in their final match of this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. On Thursday, the first Test between Australia and Pakistan begins, and Friday will see the Boston Celtics face the Orlando Magic.
Heading into the weekend, UFC 296 will see Leon Edwards fight Colby Covington in Las Vegas, and Premier League action rounds out the week, as rivals Liverpool and Manchester United go head-to-head on Sunday.
NHL: Dallas Stars v Detroit Red Wings

The Dallas Stars will take on the Detroit Red Wings on Monday at the American Airlines Center in the NHL. Both sides have looked relatively strong at the start of this season and will be looking to stay in the mix for a good seeding for the playoffs, with the Stars sitting third in the Central Division, and the Red Wings in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. This is sure to be a high-quality affair.
Cricket in South Africa: South Africa v India (T20I)

On Tuesday, the second T20 of the series between South Africa and India will take place at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. The first match in the series at Kingsmead Cricket Ground on Sunday 10th was abandoned without a ball being bowled, due to heavy rain in the Durban area. India are currently ranked the number one team in the official T20 Team Rankings, South Africa sit in sixth position.
UEFA Champions League: Newcastle United v AC Milan

The final games of this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage take place this week, and Group F still hangs in the balance, with all four teams still able to qualify for the knockout stages. Newcastle United will host AC Milan at St James’ Park on Wednesday, and both sides require a win in their game to progress to the next stage, as well as relying on PSG to lose or draw against group leaders Borussia Dortmund, along with various goal requirements.
Cricket in Australia: Australia v Pakistan

On Thursday, the first match of a three-Test series between Australia and Pakistan gets underway, with the game taking place at Perth Stadium. Australia will go into the series as most people’s favourites, after winning the ICC World Test Championship against India in June, as well as sitting four places higher in the Test Team Rankings than Pakistan and playing on home soil.
NBA: Boston Celtics v Orlando Magic

There is exciting NBA action on Friday, as the Boston Celtics, who currently lead the Eastern Conference after a superb start to the season, face off against the Orlando Magic, who have also had an impressive start to their campaign, sitting second in the same conference. The two sides then meet again on Sunday. There is sure to be exciting action throughout both games.
UFC: UFC 296: Edwards v Covington

UFC 296 takes place in Las Vegas on Saturday, with Leon Edwards looking to defend his belt against Colby Covington in a UFC Welterweight Championship bout at the T-Mobile Arena. The current champion boasts an impressive record of 21-3-0, whilst the challenger holds a record of 17-3-0.
Premier League: Liverpool v Manchester United

Anfield, Liverpool
On Sunday, an exciting match-up takes place in the Premier League, as Liverpool host Manchester United at Anfield. The hosts have started their campaign extremely well, sitting top of the league, and will go into this matchup with confidence, whilst the visitors haven’t enjoyed a great start to the season, but despite this, will be up for this fixture against one of their main rivals.
