This Week in Sport: 2nd September − 8th September 2024

The upcoming week is full of exciting sporting events. The Paralympic Triathlon Finals are on Monday, Tuesday sees Naoya Inoue fight TJ Doheny, and Stage 17 of the Vuelta a España is on Wednesday. The NFL season commences on Thursday with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Baltimore Ravens, and there is more NFL action on Friday with the Philadelphia Eagles playing the Green Bay Packers in Brazil.

Going into the weekend, South Africa take on New Zealand again in the Rugby Championship on Saturday, and the US Open tennis concludes on Sunday.

Paralympic Triathlon: Triathlon Finals

The Paralympic Triathlon Men’s and Women’s Individual Finals will take place on Monday in central Paris. The Men's event was originally scheduled for Sunday but had to be postponed because of concerns about the water quality in the Seine River after heavy rainfall.

Boxing Fights: Naoya Inoue v TJ Doheny

Ariake Arena, Tokyo

Naoya Inoue will defend his Undisputed Super Bantamweight title against TJ Doheny at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo. Inoue has been truly dominant in his career so far with a perfect 27 wins in 27 fights, 24 via knockout. Meanwhile, Doheny, a former IBF Super Bantamweight Champion, is riding a three-fight knockout streak, with all his victories coming in Japan.

Vuelta a España: Vuelta a España Stage 17

Wednesday will see the Vuelta a España continue with Stage 17 from Arnuero to Santander. The stage begins on relatively flat terrain before two climbs add some challenge just before the halfway point. Kaden Groves beat green jersey holder Wout van Aert in an uphill finish to win Stage 15 on Sunday, while overall leader Ben O'Connor maintained a 1 minute and 3 seconds advantage over Primož Roglič.

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs v Baltimore Ravens

Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City

The highly anticipated NFL season gets underway on Thursday with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs, led by the sensational Patrick Mahomes, and the Ravens, with the electric quarterback Lamar Jackson, will set the tone for the season in what could be an early preview of the AFC Championship game in January.

NFL: Philadelphia Eagles v Green Bay Packers

On Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles will take on the Green Bay Packers in a historic showdown at Neo Química Arena in São Paulo. It will be the first-ever NFL regular season game played in South America. Both the Eagles and Packers are very much expected to be in the mix this season in the NFC. It is sure to be an exciting match-up with an incredible atmosphere.

The Rugby Championship: South Africa v New Zealand

Saturday 7th September 3:00PM GMT /5:00PM Local Time

Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town

Saturday sees the second Test match between South Africa and New Zealand in the Rugby Championship at the Cape Town Stadium. The Springboks secured a thrilling 31-27 victory over the All Blacks in their first encounter and currently top the Championship table with an 8-point lead. The All Blacks will be desperate to fight back and win this week.

Grand Slam (Tennis): US Open Men’s Singles Final

Sunday 8th September 3:00PM GMT/11:00AM Local Time

USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York

The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the season, will wrap up on Sunday with the Men’s Singles Final at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. The Women’s Singles Final is on Saturday. With major names knocked out in both the Men's and Women's draws, it should be an exciting second week at Flushing Meadows.
