This Week in Sport: 22nd July − 28th July 2024
One of the great sporting weeks begins as the Summer Olympics fast approaches. On Monday, the Minnesota Twins take on the Philadelphia Phillies in MLB, Tuesday sees the Oval Invincibles host the Birmingham Phoenix in the opening games of the Hundred, and the MLB on Wednesday sees the New York Yankees take on the New York Mets. The UEFA European U19 Championship Semi-finals are on Thursday, and Friday will see the eagerly anticipated Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Going into the weekend, Leon Edwards fights Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 on Saturday, and the exciting Belgian Grand Prix takes place on Sunday.
MLB: Minnesota Twins v Philadelphia Phillies

The Minnesota Twins take on the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday in MLB at Target Field in Minneapolis. Both teams are riding high currently in the standings but need to improve their recent form. The Phillies will also look to end their two-game losing streak against the Twins from when they met last season. Ranger Suárez is pitching for the Phillies with Bailey Ober pitching for the Twins.
The Hundred: Oval Invincibles v Birmingham Phoenix

The fourth edition of The Hundred starts on Tuesday at the Oval, as the Oval Invincibles host the Birmingham Phoenix in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. The Invincibles will take a lot of stopping once again in the men’s tournament. In the women’s tournament, the Southern Brave are tipped to be the favourites to hold on to their title.
MLB: New York Yankees v New York Mets

There is more exciting MLB action on Wednesday as the New York Yankees and the New York Mets face off at Yankee Stadium. Both teams expect to be in the postseason mix come the end of the season with both sitting in Wild Card spots in their respective Leagues currently. Sean Manaea is expected to pitch for the Mets, whilst the Yankees are still considering their pitching rotation.
UEFA European U19 Championship: Italy U19 v TBC

The UEFA European U19 Championship Semifinals kick off on Thursday at Windsor Park in Belfast. Italy, having topped their group, secured a place in the first semi-final and will face the runners-up from Group B. The second semi-final will also take place on Thursday involving Ukraine and the winner from Group B, with the final set for Sunday.
Olympic Ceremonies: Opening Ceremony

Trocadéro Gardens, Paris
Friday will see Paris commence the 2024 Summer Olympics with a groundbreaking opening ceremony on the Seine River. The XXXIII Olympiad will feature competition across 32 sports and 329 events. The United States are the favourite for most gold and total medals. China are projected to finish second in the medal table while Great Britain, hosts France and Australia are expected to be in the mix for third spot this summer.
UFC: UFC 304: Edwards vs. Muhammad 2

On Saturday Leon Edwards will defend his Welterweight title against Belal Muhammad at UFC 304 at Co-op Live in Manchester. They fought to a no-contest in 2021 due to an accidental eye poke, which is the only blip on Edwards' 13-fight, eight-year undefeated streak. Edwards will defend his title for the third time, while Muhammad will make his first attempt to become champion.
Formula 1: Belgian Grand Prix

Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot
Sunday sees the thrilling Formula 1 season continue with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. Oscar Piastri won his first-ever Grand Prix in Hungary in the last round. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen has now gone three races without a win for the first time since 2021 but still leads the championship by 76 points.
