This Week in Sport: 4th September − 10th September 2023
There are some exciting sporting events coming up this week to look out for. The US Open tennis Grand Slam continues Monday, England face New Zealand in their final T20 of the series on Tuesday, and Wednesday sees Canada take on Slovenia in the FIBA Basketball World Cup. On Thursday, the NFL season begins with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions, and Friday sees France face New Zealand in the opening game of the Rugby World Cup.
Heading into the weekend, the US Open Women’s Singles Final will take place on Saturday, and South Africa take on Scotland in the Rugby World Cup on Sunday.
Grand Slam (Tennis): US Open Day 8

The US Open enters its second week, and Monday will see some exciting matchups take place throughout the tournament. In the Men’s Singles, reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz takes on Matteo Arnalidi in his hunt to retain his title and eighth seed Andrey Rublev faces Jack Draper. In the women’s singles, third seed Jessica Pegula faces 17th seed Madison Keys.
Cricket in England: England v New Zealand

The fourth and final T20 of the series between England and New Zealand will take place on Tuesday at Trent Bridge, with England currently holding a 2-1 lead. England won the first two games of the series convincingly, but the third T20 at Edgbaston saw New Zealand show their quality to win the match, meaning England will need to avoid defeat to win the series outright.
FIBA Basketball World Cup: Canada v Slovenia

On Wednesday, there is Quarter-Final action in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, as one of the tournament’s favourites, Canada, take on Slovenia. Canada defeated Spain comfortably in their previous game to top their Second Round group, whereas Slovenia suffered a heavy defeat to Germany, but still managed to progress into the Quarterfinals. Germany and Latvia will also play on Wednesday.
NFL: Kansas City Chiefs v Detroit Lions

The new NFL season begins on Thursday, as reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, will take on the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The Chiefs are once again amongst the favourites to lift the Lombardi Trophy, with other favourites including the Philadelphia Eagles, the Buffalo Bills, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Rugby World Cup: France v New Zealand
Friday 8th September 7:15PM GMT/9:15PM Local Time

The much-anticipated Rugby World Cup gets underway on Friday, as hosts France take on three-time winners New Zealand in the opening match of the tournament. Both sides are amongst the favourites to win the competition outright, so will be wanting to get their World Cup campaigns off to a strong start against tough opposition.

Saturday will see the penultimate day of the US Open take place, with the Women’s Singles Final the standout match of the day. Favourite for the tournament, and reigning champion, Iga Świątek, was knocked out in a shock result against Jeļena Ostapenko. The Men’s Singles Final will take place on Sunday.
Rugby World Cup: South Africa v Scotland

Stade Vélodrome, Marseille
On Sunday, reigning Rugby World Cup Champions, South Africa, will face a tough Scotland side in their first group match of the tournament. Sitting in a group which also features Ireland, both sides will want to ensure they get off to the best start possible for the chance to progress to the knockout stages.
