This Week in Sport: 3rd July − 9th July 2023

There is a wide variety of exciting sporting events taking place this week. On Monday, the prestigious Wimbledon Championships get underway, Tuesday sees the New York Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles in MLB, and Stage Five of the Tour de France takes place on Wednesday. Thursday sees the third Ashes Test begin, and on Friday, day two of the US Women’s Open takes place.

Heading into the weekend, the final of the European U21 Championship will be hosted at the Batumi Arena in Georgia on Saturday, and Formula 1 action rounds out the week with the British Grand Prix.

Grand Slam (Tennis): Wimbledon Day 1

The famous tennis Grand Slam, the Wimbledon Championships, gets underway on Monday, as the world’s best head to the All England Lawn Tennis Club with the aim of winning one of the most coveted titles in the sport. In the men’s singles event, defending champion Novak Djokovic heads in as favourite, with world number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, not far behind. In the women’s event, world number 1 Iga Świątek and reigning champion Aryna Sabalenka both look strong contenders for the title.

MLB: New York Yankees v Baltimore Orioles

On Tuesday, the New York Yankees will host the Baltimore Orioles at the Yankee Stadium in game 2 of a four-game series. The Yankees currently sit three wins behind the Orioles in the American League East Division, so will be hoping home-advantage will help them overtake their opponents in the standings. The Orioles will want to turn their form around in this series, after losing four out of their last five games.

Tour de France: Tour de France Stage 5

Pau, France

The Tour de France continues Wednesday with stage five. The day sees riders take on a steep mountain stage in the Pyrenees, starting at Pau, and travelling over 160 kilometres to Laruns. After the first weekend of riding, Adam Yates currently sits top of the general classification, with favourites Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard sitting in second and sixth, respectively.

The Ashes: England v Australia

Headingley, Leeds

On Thursday, the third Test match of this year’s Ashes series takes place, as England and Australia head to Headingley in Leeds for what is likely to be another match of high-quality and excitement. Australia head into the match with a 2-0 lead, despite Ben Stokes’ heroic effort in the second Test at Lord’s, which saw England fall short of Australia’s total by 43 runs.

LPGA Tour: US Women’s Open Day 2

Pebble Beach Golf Links, Del Monte Forest

The US Women’s Open heads into its second day on Friday. The tournament, which is one of five women’s golf majors, will take place at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. Australia’s Minjee Lee won last year’s event and will be hoping to repeat the feat this year, but will face tough competition from Lilia Vu and Yin Ruoning, who have both won majors already this year and will be looking to add another trophy to their cabinets.

European U21 Championship: European U21 Championship Final

Batumi Arena, Georgia

The final of the European U21 Championship takes place at the Batumi Arena in Georgia on Saturday. The places in the final are yet to be decided, with the Semifinals still needing to be played earlier in the week. Israel will face one of the tournament favourites in England, and Spain will battle it out with Ukraine in the other Semi-Final.

Formula 1: British Grand Prix

Sunday 9th July 2:00PM GMT/3:00PM Local Time

Silverstone Circuit, Towcester

On Sunday, Formula 1 action takes place, as the drivers head to the famous Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix. Red Bull continue their dominant streak of winning every single race this season and Max Verstappen will go in as favourite for this Grand Prix. Ferrari, Mercedes, and Aston Martin will be looking to jump on any mistake the Red Bull team make and will be hoping to end their winning run.
