The tournament was first held in 1960 and ran until 2004, with a brief hiatus in the 1980s. The competition featured the winners of the <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-uefa-champions-league">UEFA Champions League</a> and the <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/competition-copa-libertadores">Copa Libertadores</a>, the top club competitions in Europe and South America, respectively. Some of the most iconic teams in football history, such as <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/team-manchester-united">Manchester United</a>, FC <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-barcelona">Barcelona</a>, and <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/team-ac-milan">AC Milan</a>, have been crowned champions of the tournament. Legendary players like Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and Ronaldinho have also graced the pitches of the Intercontinental Cup. The matches were held in different stadiums across Asia, Europe, and South America, with the <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/city-tokyo">Tokyo</a> National Stadium in <a href="https://www.fixturecalendar.com/sport-football/team-japan-1">Japan</a> being the most frequent host venue. The coveted trophy was retired in 2004 when FIFA created the new Club World Cup to replace it as the premier international club football competition.
