This Week in Sport: 16th October − 22nd October 2023

There are some exciting sporting events taking place around the world in the upcoming week. On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL, Tuesday sees England host Italy in the UEFA European Championships Qualifying, and the New York Liberty face the Las Vegas Aces in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals on Wednesday. Thursday will see the Texas Rangers go up against the Houston Astros in the MLB Playoffs, and Argentina face New Zealand in the first Semi-Final of the Rugby World Cup on Friday.

Heading into the weekend, the second Rugby World Cup Semi-Final will see England take on South Africa on Saturday, and Cricket World Cup action rounds out the week, as hosts India face New Zealand.

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers v Dallas Cowboys

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood

Monday will see NFL action, as the Los Angeles Chargers host the Dallas Cowboys at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The two sides have had a mixed bag of results so far, with the Chargers sitting on a record of 2-2 and the Cowboys currently on 3-2, so both will be hoping to get the edge over their opponents in this one to improve their standings.

UEFA European Championships Qualifying: England v Italy

Tuesday 17th October 6:45PM GMT/7:45PM Local Time

Wembley Stadium, London

England will host Italy in the UEFA European Championships Qualifying at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday. In what is a repeat of the Euro 2020 Final, where Italy won on penalties, the two sides will be looking to cement their positions in the qualifying spots for the next edition of the tournament. England currently sit undefeated in the table, and Italy’s only loss so far in the qualifying stages was to England in March.

WNBA: New York Liberty v Las Vegas Aces

Wednesday 18th October 12:00AM (19th) GMT/8:00PM Local Time

Barclays Center, New York

On Wednesday, the New York Liberty will go head-to-head with the Las Vegas Aces in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Aces currently lead the Liberty 2-1 and can wrap up the title in the game on Wednesday. The Liberty, however, will be looking to complete a historic comeback in a series where they trailed 2-0, and will need to win the remaining games to do so.

MLB: Texas Rangers v Houston Astros

The Texas Rangers take on the Houston Astros in Game 4 of their seven game American League Championship Series. The Rangers won Game 1 of the series 2-0, shutting out the Astros in impressive fashion. The Rangers will look to build on their performance in this game, whilst the Astros will be hoping they can improve their batting to give them an opportunity of progressing to the World Series.

Rugby World Cup: Argentina v New Zealand

Friday 20th October 7:00PM GMT/9:00PM Local Time

Stade de France, Saint-Denis

On Friday, the first Semi-Final of the 2023 Rugby World Cup will take place, as Argentina face New Zealand at the Stade de France. Argentina progressed to the Semifinals after an impressive victory over Wales, beating them 29-17 in a match where they were not favoured to win by many. The All Blacks have enjoyed a high-scoring tournament so far and will now be most people’s favourites in this game, after defeating Ireland with an impressive performance in the Quarterfinals.

Rugby World Cup: England v South Africa

Saturday 21st October 7:00PM GMT/9:00PM Local Time

Stade de France, Saint-Denis

The second Rugby World Cup Semi-Final will take place on Saturday, in what is a repeat of the 2019 Final, with England facing South Africa at the Stade de France. England have been slightly underwhelming in recent times, and will be desperate to put in a performance. Reigning champions South Africa edged past hosts France in a spectacular Quarter-Final to keep their hope of retaining their title alive.

Cricket World Cup: India v New Zealand

Sunday 22nd October 8:30AM GMT/2:00PM Local Time

Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala

Cricket World Cup action will round out the week, as hosts India will play New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The two sides are currently undefeated in the competition, sitting comfortably in the positions to progress to the Semifinals, but will need to keep up their strong performances, with many matches in the round-robin stage remaining.
