Event of the Day: Liverpool versus Paris Saint-Germain

Our event of the day is the UEFA Champions’ League group stage match between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield. The opening game of the competition for both sides, it sees two powerhouses of attacking football go head to head. The game boasts two star-studded teams, including players like the red-hot Mohamed Salah for Liverpool and World Cup hero Kylian Mbappé for PSG. This is sure to be a memorable match between two giants of European football. Both are undefeated through five games in their respective domestic competitions. In the Champions’ League, Europe’s premier intercontinental club competition, Liverpool will be looking to make a statement in a tough group. Last year, Liverpool won their group and seemed dominant throughout the later stages of the competition. However, they lost 3-1 in the final to Real Madrid. PSG also topped their group in last year’s competition but were soundly beaten in their round-of-16 game against Real Madrid.

Liverpool last won the tournament in 2005, when they overcame a 3-0 deficit at half time to beat AC Milan on penalties in a truly unforgettable game. PSG’s best result in the tournament came in the 1994-95 season, when they reached the semi-finals. Both teams are bursting with talent. Liverpool boast the likes of Mohamed Salah, who has scored 34 goals in 41 appearances for the Reds. There is also Sadio Mané, who has scored 4 times in Liverpool’s first 5 Premier League games this season. On the other side of the ball, PSG has Kylian Mbappé who truly became an international star at the 2018 Word Cup, scoring 4 goals, including one in the final. A new signing for PSG, having joined them from Monaco after a spell on loan at the Parisian side last season, he has scored 4 times in 3 matches. Although only a group-stage match, both teams will be looking to start this year’s Champions’ League dominantly.
