Event of the Day: Day 1 of the Rogers Cup

Our event of the day is the opening day of the Rogers Cup in Canada. The men’s tournament will take place in Toronto, whilst the women’s tournament is in Montreal, as the biggest names in tennis continue their preparation for the US Open. Highlights from today’s action include the clash between Maria Sharapova and Sesil Karatantcheva, Sharapova was runner-up in the same event back in 2009.

There is an all American clash between Venus Williams and Caroline Dolehide, Venus lost in the 2014 Rogers cup final. 2018 Wimbledon semi-finalist Julia Görges faces Timea Babos of Hungary in another tasty encounter today, and former world number one Karolína Plíšková plays compatriot Kateřina Siniaková. A real A-list of tennis stars will be in action in Montreal over the next week, even with the late absence of Serena Williams. Grand slam holders Angelique Kerber, Simone Halep, Sloane Stephens and Caroline Wozniacki are all waiting in the second round having received byes. Meanwhile in the men’s draw, 2016 Wimbledon runner up Milos Raonic faces 2017 ATP World Tour Finals runner up David Goffin in what should be a highly entertaining match. Kyle Edmund plays Diego Schwartzman and Daniel Medvedev takes on Jack Sock. With the likes of Rafael Nadal, Juan Martín del Potro, Alexander Zverev and Marin Čilić earning byes into the second round, tennis of the highest quality will be on display all week.

Honourable mentions around the globe go to day 5 of the European Championships in Glasgow and Berlin. Athletics heats begin in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, whilst at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Jack Carlin of Great Britain is one to watch in the men’s individual sprint. Further action from the European Championships includes swimming, diving and synchronised swimming. Elsewhere in Europe, the Sailing World Championships enter their eighth day in Aarhus, Denmark. Further sailing action can be found on the waters near the Isle of White, where day 3 of the prestigious Cowes Week takes place. The final fixture in a furious first weekend of Championship football comes from the KC Stadium, where Hull City host Aston Villa. In the United States, the Chicago White Sox host the New York Yankees at Guaranteed Rate Field. Additional MLB fixtures include the Cleveland Indians versus the Minnesota Twins, the Miami Marlins against the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets versus the Cincinnati Reds.

Whatever you’re watching, enjoy!
