This Week in Sport: 15th April − 21st April 2024

There is exciting sporting action this week. On Monday, Chelsea face Everton in the Premier League, the NBA Play-in Tournament gets underway Tuesday, with the Sacramento Kings facing the Golden State Warriors, and UEFA Champions League action takes place on Wednesday, as Manchester City host Real Madrid in the second leg of their Quarter-final tie. On Thursday, the Premier League Darts season continues, and Friday will see the Lucknow Super Giants face the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

Heading into the weekend, the new Diamond League season begins on Saturday with the Xiamen event, and La Liga action rounds out the week with El Clásico.

Premier League: Chelsea v Everton

There is Premier League action on Monday as Chelsea host Everton at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have not had their best season, but still have a chance to secure a European competition place, having games in hand over all the teams above them. Everton, who have had eight points deducted this season for breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, find themselves in a relegation battle, sitting only two points above Luton Town in the drop zone.

NBA: Sacramento Kings v Golden State Warriors

The NBA’s Postseason begins on Tuesday, and the Sacramento Kings will host the Golden State Warriors in the matchup between ninth and tenth in the Western Conference. The loser of this one will be eliminated, whilst the winner will go on to face the loser of Tuesday's seventh versus eighth Play-in matchup between the LA Lakers and the New Orleans Pelicans, on Friday. The NBA Playoffs Proper begins on Saturday, after the final seedings are decided in the Play-in tournament.

UEFA Champions League: Manchester City v Real Madrid

City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester

On Wednesday, there is a huge game in the UEFA Champions League, as reigning Champions, Manchester City, host 14-time winners, Real Madrid, in the second leg of the Quarter-final at the City of Manchester Stadium. The first leg saw an absolute classic occur, with both sides scoring three goals and some phenomenal finishing on show for many of the goals. This is sure to be a high-quality affair. Also on Wednesday, Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich, with the aggregate heading into that one 2-2.

PDC Darts: Premier League Darts Night Twelve

Thursday 18th April 6:00PM GMT/8:00PM Local Time

Rotterdam Ahoy, Rotterdam

The PDC Premier League Darts season continues Thursday with Night Twelve at the Rotterdam Ahoy. Last time out in Birmingham, Michael van Gerwen won his fourth night of the competition, placing him in third in the overall standings, and firmly in the top four places heading into the final run of nights. Luke Littler, who has won two nights in his debut Premier League season, sits top of the table with 26 points, and Luke Humphries sits in second, winning three nights overall. There is still a lot to play for, as fourth place, currently occupied by Nathan Aspinall, is under pressure from 2023 World Champion, Michael Smith, who meets Littler in the first round of Night Twelve.

Indian Premier League: Lucknow Super Giants v Chennai Super Kings

On Friday, the Indian Premier League will see an exciting matchup between the Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. The Super Giants have won three of their six opening games and sit fifth in the table, whilst the reigning champions, the Super Kings, sit in third, winning four of their first six games and will be eyeing up top spot in the table.

Diamond League: Diamond League China

Saturday 20th April 9:35AM GMT/5:35PM Local Time

Xiamen Egret Stadium, Xiamen

The new Diamond League season begins on Saturday with the Xiamen event. The event will see some exciting action, including the men’s 100, 800 and 5000 metres, women’s 200, 400 and 1500 metres, men’s high jump and pole vault, and women’s shot put and discus. This year’s Diamond League will have increased importance for many athletes, as they will see it as a preparation for the Summer Olympics in Paris.

La Liga: Real Madrid v Barcelona

Sunday 21st April 9:00PM GMT/7:00PM Local Time

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Madrid

La Liga action will round out the week with the always highly anticipated El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Real Madrid currently sit relatively comfortably at the top of the league table, eight points above Barcelona in second, but a win here for the visitors would put pressure on Madrid heading into the final stretch of the season.
